The Craft of Japanese Urushi-Lacquer
Exhibition & Lecture on Japanese Urushi and Joboji Lacquerware
BACKGROUND
Approximately 70% of Japan’s domestic urushi (lacquer) is produced in Ninohe City, a small town of about 30,000 people located inland in the northeastern prefecture of Iwate. Apart from its artistic and decorative appeal, urushi is also an essential part of daily life in Japan. The particular urushi found in Ninohe City, known as Joboji urushi, is renowned for its quality and has been designated for use in the preservation of such World Heritage Sites as The Golden Pavilion or Kinkakuji, in Kyoto, Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, and Iwate’s own Chusonji Konjikido.
